If you’re ready for a new job in the new decade, we’ve got some good news. There was a 1.8% year-on-year increase in job ads on SEEK in the past year, which means more opportunities to make your next move. So, which industries and roles led the way?

Top 3 industries for job ad growth

Community Services & Development led the way with 27% year-on-year growth. New Zealand unveiled its first Wellbeing Budget last year, which may have contributed to the increase. The budget’s priority areas include lifting Māori and Pacific incomes, reducing child poverty and addressing family violence.

There has been a broadening of government spending in these areas,” says Jeremy Couchman, Senior Economist at Kiwibank.

The Consulting & Strategy industry was in second place with year-on-year growth of 21.5%.

The Mining, Resources & Energy industry was third with a 13.4% year-on-year increase in job ads. Sharon Zollner, Chief Economist at ANZ, says the recent moratorium on offshore oil and gas exploration may have led to the growth. “Companies that still hold permits may have increased their investment before the ban comes into effect,” Zollner says.

Specialisations on the rise

Indigenous & Multicultural Services in the Community Services & Development industry was the fastest-growing job on SEEK over the past year with a 119% year-on-year boost. This may be due to increased investment from the Wellbeing Budget.

Compliance & Risk roles in the Accounting industry recorded a 103.6% year-on-year lift.

Speech Therapists roles were in third place with a 72% increase in job ads on SEEK. Camille Coom, General Manager New Zealand of Medacs Healthcare, says there is growing demand for talent right across the healthcare industry. “The population growth is having an impact and there is a shortage of good talent within the sector because we are just not training enough people, particularly in specialist roles” Coom says. “Candidates are in strong demand.”
