New Zealand's booming salaries

Looking for a new job with a bigger pay packet? You may be in luck. Average advertised salaries in New Zealand were up by 3.1% year-on-year across the country. So, how are salaries shifting in your industry? Here we explore the industries and roles driving the growth.

Top 3 booming salaries by industry

The Animals, Farming and Conservation industry led the way with the fastest growth for average advertised salaries on SEEK. Increasing by 4.6% to 72,648.

This was followed by the Administration & Office Support industry, which recorded a 4.2% lift to $55,291. Adam Shapley, Managing Director of Hays in New Zealand, attributes salary growth to the evolution of the industry.

“Employers are looking to gain greater value from their support staff by increasing their duties and responsibilities,” he says. “Employers want to see candidates who can multitask and who have proactively taken on additional responsibilities – these candidates are presented with the best opportunities.”

Hospitality & Tourism was in third place for year-on-year growth. Salaries were up by 4.2% to $55,230.

Jo Walton, Recruitment Consultant at TMS Talent New Zealand, says the lift to the minimum wage in 2019 has had an impact on salaries across Hospitality and Tourism.

“In our opinion, it has definitely impacted the growth in salaries, in conjunction with the continued increase of hospitality establishments opening in the market,” she says.

Top 20 booming salaries by specialisation

Tour Guides in the Hospitality and Tourism industry recorded the fastest rate of salary growth on SEEK with a 17.2% increase to $53,346.

“Salaries were really in need of a lift in order for employers to attract quality candidates who saw little incentive to move,” says Walton.

Salaries in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration roles in Trades and Services followed with a 16.3% increase to $79,877.

Winery & Viticulture roles in the Hospitality and Tourism industry were in third place with a 14.3% salary lift to $67,000.
